Flat Earth Pizzas Impact Summary, 2023
Our purpose at Flat Earth Pizzas is to create a better and fairer food system through our positive impact pizzas and sustainable wines.
Eating out shouldn’t be costly to the environment. The broken food system is one of the biggest contributors to our global climate crisis. We want to lead by example and set out the blueprint for a sustainable, delicious, planet-positive dining experience. The food businesses that are currently known as working towards a better healthier planet are deemed niche and are often expensive for the consumer.
We chose to use pizza as the vehicle for change as it’s accessible, understandable, a global favourite and tastes great. We saw a gap in the market when it came to pizzas with innovative toppings, interesting flavour combinations and ingredients with integrity.
Our purpose is to create a better and fairer food system through our positive impact pizzas and sustainable wines. Here’s a summary of our sustainable efforts for 2023.
Food Waste
In 2023, we took part in two food waste audits by ReLondon in association with the Sustainable Restaurant Association. We measured Spoilage, Preparation and Plate within our kitchen. Our food waste per cover was considerably lower, both times, than the other ‘sustainable’ restaurants within the test group.
Coffee Grounds
This year we have diverted 575kg of our spent coffee grounds from going into landfill through responsible disposal.
Our spent coffee grounds are transformed into environmentally friendly fuels for sustainably heating your home.
The UK consumes around 98 million cups of coffee a day, generating hundreds of thousands of tonnes of waste coffee grounds each year. Unfortunately, most of these used grounds, when ending up in landfill, release greenhouse gases - including methane, which is 25x more potent than carbon dioxide.
PLANET-FRIENDLY PIZZAS
We sold 15,000 pizzas in 2023. That means 15,000 veg forward, meat-free meals were eaten.
Good source of wholegrains and fibre. No artificial ingredients

CLOSED LOOP WINE
We have sold 887 litres of organic wine on tap which is the equivalent of 2,480 single use bottles of wine.
There is a 96% reduction of the carbon footprint of a glass of wine poured from our refill kegs compared to one poured from traditional bottles.
Pouring from refillable 20L kegs reduces the carbon footprint by 30% compared to a glass of wine poured from a single use keg.
TAKEAWAY WINE
We also provide wine on tap to takeaway by offering bottle refills. We have introduced 172 people into this scheme with a further 270 refills poured.
This keeps the otherwise single use wine bottle in circulation.
Charity
These are the charities we have supported this year through donating proceeds from pizzas sold, hosting breakfasts and raising awareness.
TEAM
We have a strong team of people working with us. Our full timers have been with us for over a year. Our last leaver was in July 2023.
We now operate a waiting list of people who want to join our team.
We are paying members of Hospitality Action, an employee assistance programme that is there to give added support in the face of physical illness, mental health issues to financial difficulty, family problems to addiction.
COMMUNITY
To date we have facilitated approximately 1000 organic veg bag collections for local people in the community.
We have been a veg collection point for Growing Communities since February. Growing COmmunities are building a better food system, paying farmers fairly, enabling healthy soil and producing fresh, organic, seasonal veg on London farms. Their veg box scheme encourages people in east London to eat better whilst bringing real, positive change.
